Scion Executive Search (www.scionexecutivesearch.com) has been retained to conduct the search for the Director of Facilities at Guide Dogs for the Blind (www.guidedogs.com). This individual would need to be located within commuting distance to GDB’s office in San Rafael, CA and this role is based on-site 100%.

OVERALL SUMMARY:

Reporting to the CFO, The Director of Facilities is responsible for providing the overall leadership and strategic management of the Facilities Department for two large campuses and several remote locations.  This individual is part of the leadership team and envisions and plans for the infrastructure needed to support GDB’s mission and short and long-term goals. This individual plans, directs and monitors all activities and operations of the facilities department organization-wide, including grounds maintenance, fleet, office and kennel operations, facility construction and renovation.  The Director of Facilities communicates and coordinates activities with other departments and outside agencies. This position manages staff and other resources to ensure a safe and productive environment for clients, staff, volunteers, donors, guests, and visitors.

POSITION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Brings extensive experience, judgment, and creativity to help enable GDB to achieve its mission over the long run.
  • Envisions and plans for facilities to be available in optimal operating conditions to allow GDB to meet its mission in a constantly changing environment. 
  • Exercises strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively articulate these needs and plans to the Board, executive team and staff, as well as ensures coordination with neighbors sharing property lines. 
  • Is a visionary for capital improvement and space planning.
  • Oversees all phases of facility construction and renovation projects entailing special purpose buildings crucial for the success of GDB’s programs.  This includes collaboration across the organization and with specialists to ensure optimal architectural design, planning for interim operations during construction, and to maximize safety, quality and efficiency.
  • Organizes methods for cost control, compliance with permit and technical requirements and adherence to schedules by all parties while ensuring green technology and sustainability measures are evaluated.
  • Ensures collaboration across the organization for planning and executing the transition to new or renovated facilities when they are completed.
  • Working in collaboration with the CFO, and attorneys, reviews and manages all contracts and legal documents related to ongoing maintenance as well as for construction projects. 
  • Oversees the planning and organization of the functions of the Facilities Departments for both the California and Oregon campuses of the organization and supports the needs of remote workers.
  • Mentors and assists staff to ensure the facilities are functional, safe, and ready to use for all constituents.
  • Ensures the functioning of various controlled spaces, including all building’s technical systems including electrical, utilities, HVAC, water, cleaning, fire and alarm systems and implements an appropriate maintenance schedule.
  • Evaluates departmental operations and initiates changes as neces­sary; may lead  or supervise the preparation of operational poli­cies and procedures.
  • Assists and coaches staff in monitoring the performance of contracted maintenance services and project-related vendors against contractual expectations for facilities operations.
  • Prioritizes, assigns, and monitors performance against goals and objectives.
  • Conducts job evaluations; recruits, trains, coaches, motivates, develops, and disciplines staff as necessary.
  • Prepares and/or administers the annual Facilities Departments’ budgets. Monitors and maintains expenses within budgetary guidelines and supports other departments in evaluating specific maintenance requirements of dog-care related equipment.
  • Prepares and/or administers the facilities related capital expenses portion of the annual budget.
  • Ensures compliance with all regulatory agencies for facilities operations (OSHA, Fire Marshall, BAAQC, insurance, Department of Agriculture, DEQ, etc.). Organizes obtaining the necessary permits, observes regulatory restrictions, and facilitates inspections.
  • Adheres to and coordinates with the safety manager to update and ensure compliance with our organization's safety policies and procedures and encourages others to do the same.
  • Promptly reports incidents and accidents according to campus procedures.
  • Undertakes other duties, as necessary.

POSITION ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum 10 years progressively responsible experience managing facilities operations with annual budgets of at least $1,000,000. 
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification recommended.
  • Proficiency reading and interpreting construction drawings and specifications required. 
  • Able to review and understand facilities related legal documents.
  • Understanding of general concepts and techniques related to plumbing, electrical, HVAC, architectural and space planning design, and project planning and management.
  • Experience implementing and managing a “Green” infrastructure a plus.
  • Proficient in basic word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications/help desk software.
  • Ability to safely lift up to 40 pounds. Employees are required to seek assistance when lifting objects weighing more than 40 pounds.
  • Trades experience, campus facility experience, or work performed in an animal-managed facility is a plus.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to be insured at regular risk rates.
  • Occasional weekend, holiday or evening work and some travel required (approximately 15%).

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

For this role, GDB offers $135-$150k+ annual base salary based on experience plus a robust benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, a 403 (b) retirement plan with employer match, and a generous paid time off program including 11 paid holidays, 15 paid days off, 10 sick days,  employee lunch program, employee assistance, employee referral program, school visitation, tuition reimbursement, wellness programs, dog friendly workplace, and service awards after periods of service to the organization.
